Pustaka Budaya Dunia (PBD), a self-supported initiative from Indonesia, is inviting museums and art galleries worldwide to participate in their mission of making cultural knowledge accessible to every Indonesian. PBD is seeking partnerships with museums interested in cost-free translating their websites and other related materials into Indonesian.
Indonesia is the most populous country in Southeast Asia and the fourth most populous in the world with a population of almost 280 million people. It is estimated that more than 30% of Indonesians speak English, but it will often be at a level not good enough to fluently enjoy reading descriptions of works of art and heritage sites. In the case of art education, a recent paper "The motivation of learning art & culture among students in Indonesia" published by a team of scientists from various Indonesian universities (Nadia Sigi Prameswari from the Department of Visual Arts, Semarang State University; Muhammad Saud from Universitas Airlangga; Joko Lulut Amboro and Novita Wahyuningsih from Sebelas Maret University, Indonesia) explains why students in Indonesia ignore art and culture lessons. This happens because art and culture lessons are considered insignificant and not interesting and secondly, because they are not included in the National Examination subjects. What the study also concluded is that particularly in Junior High School high quality facilities in art classes have a great influence on students’ learning motivation and learning methods.
Pustaka Budaya Dunia wants to help change this, by providing a comprehensive database of good quality material about cultural heritage from all corners of the world to Indonesian people. It is done by translating descriptions, museum pages, and various other materials to ensure that Indonesian audiences can engage with the rich cultural heritage of the world in their native language.
Our mission is to enable every Indonesian to easily access knowledge about the world's art and cultural heritage. By translating museum websites and related content into Indonesian, we are breaking barriers and fostering cultural appreciation.

While much of the captivating content about art and cultural heritage is often available in English or other popular languages, it is rarely accessible in Indonesian. Pustaka Budaya Dunia aims to change this by committing its resources and inviting volunteers to contribute to the translation efforts.
The current goal of PBD is to translate at least 100 websites of museums and art galleries worldwide by the end of 2024.
